Education Facility

Background of the Site

The Forest Lodge Education Facility Centre, located on Charnor Road in Leicester, has been vacant since 2018. Initially built as a nursery, the buildings were later repurposed as a training and conference center. However, after being out of use for several years, the Leicester City Council has decided to redevelop the site to address local housing needs.

Demolition and Approval

The demolition of the Forest Lodge Education Facility Centre was approved in July of last year. This decision cleared the way for new development opportunities, aligning with the city’s broader plans to utilize underused land for housing.

Proposed Housing Development

Leicester City Council, which owns the site, has now revealed plans to build 33 homes on the land. This development will include a mix of housing types, with three of the proposed units being bungalows. The council’s goal is to provide much-needed housing while optimizing land use.

Funding and Planning

In 2021, the city council secured funding for the development, demonstrating a commitment to improving the area’s housing stock. The land is also featured in the draft of the council’s upcoming local plan, which outlines where future developments can occur within the city.

Local Plan and Approval Process

The draft local plan, including the Forest Lodge site, is currently being approved. This document is crucial as it sets the framework for future development in Leicester, ensuring that new projects align with the city’s growth and Education Facility sustainability goals.

Council Housing and Ownership

If the proposal is approved, all 33 homes will be owned by the city council and added to their existing council housing stock. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to increase the availability of affordable housing in Leicester.

Access and Security Improvements

One of the key considerations in the planning proposal is the access to the site. Currently, the site shares an access route with the neighboring Forest Lodge Academy School. The new plans propose to separate this access, which will also involve increasing parking at the school. According to the planning documents, these changes will enhance the security of the school premises, while the entrance to the new homes will be via Knowles Road.

Next Steps

The proposal is now subject to further scrutiny and approval. If it passes the necessary stages, construction could soon begin, bringing new housing opportunities to the area and Education Facilities efficiently using a previously disused site.
